OUR IMPACT APPROACH
Measure progress that matters to people.
Access to a loan is one part of a wider story. Understanding whether people are better able to manage their enterprise, income and financial commitments requires evidence over time.

Our approach in practice
Begin with a clear outcome
For each proposed programme, define the problem, intended participants and the change being sought. Record a baseline and choose measures that can be collected responsibly.
Distinguish activity from outcomes
Training attendance and loans disbursed describe activity. Business performance, financial resilience and customer experience describe possible outcomes. The distinction matters when assessing what a programme achieved.
Show the basis of every result
Published results should identify the reporting period, population, method and limitations. Client stories add context, but one story should not be presented as proof of a programme-wide effect.
Listen to customers
Customer feedback and complaints help reveal where services need improvement. Consent, confidentiality and respectful treatment should guide any interview, survey or use of photographs.
Explore a measurement partnership
If you are designing a programme in Malawi, discuss how baseline work, monitoring and independent evaluation could be included in the partnership from the beginning.
Follow the path from intention to evidence
Start with a defined group, evidence of need and a baseline. Track delivery, the use of resources and participant feedback. Review what changed, including limitations and unintended effects. Report repayment stress and complaints alongside positive progress.
Discuss the evidence before delivery
Agree measures, a baseline, collection responsibilities, consent and review dates. Report limitations and repayment stress alongside positive outcomes.
